Hotel La Casa del Patron in Murgia (Basque country)

Casa del Patron Murgia

Casa del Patron Murgia

During our dinner at the restaurant of Casa del Patron I politely asked for a bit of butter.
“BUTTER?!” the waitress shouted, as if I´d asked her for a little bit more porridge. The bar went quiet. “What do you want with butter?!”

“Well, actually”, I dithered, cursed by years of polite upbringing,  “I´d like to put some on my bread.” “Phah. Bread.” she scoffed and swept off into the kitchen. Welcome to Basque country.

Euskada is a whole different ball game than Andalusia. On tv they showed unintelligable sports, something with dogs roped to people running in thick fog and guys playing squash with their bare hands as if their lives depended on it. Andalusian tv usually shows a moose languidly chewing grass .

Anyway, we were passing through and we wanted to stay somewhere cute, but near the highway. This palce looks like an old mansion, but actually it isn´t. It´s all new. And that´s fine. The village of Murgia is very forgettable. The hotel is modern and well equipped, over a madly popular bar with quaint little tapas. And excellent wifi, albeit only in the bar. Don´t expect long nights though, everything shuts at 21.30!

So apart from the cranky staff and the early hours, this is quite a good place to spend the night! (be warned, they allow dogs, but they certainly don´t like ´m!)
