Unemployment up a whopping 47% in Spain
200.000 Spaniards lost their jobs this January. That makes a total of 3.33 million Spaniards without a job. The credit crunch and the end of the housing bubble is causing the crisis to hit Spain harder than other countries so far.
Untill recently, the only person I knew who’d been hit by the Crisis was my hairdresser, who couldn’t afford to go on a holiday. But with numbers this grim, the Crisis has started hitting closer to home. A friend who can’t sell her house, another friend worried about losing his job. Shops closing, foreigners (mostly Brits) moving back home. I wonder how far this thing will go? Is this the worst of it or are we heading towards total chaos? Another Great Depression? Should I start stocking up on canned tuna and preparing bathtub gin? Do I get to wear a hat?

It’s a good time to buy property though! But what is the percentage of unemployment within the bracket of those able to work? That usually gives a better perspective. We had a 78% increase in december, but it was an increase compared to the year before meaning we went from 3,6 to 3,7%…
