Bar Restaurant El Trapiche
To be perfectly frank, Bar El Trapiche, next to its bigger brother El Cruce on the road from Velez-Malaga to Comares, looks like a bit of a dive. We wandered in because we were staying in La Escuela Crujía, a lovely b&b around the corner, and we were hungry. Also we were encumbered with two frisky puppies and there are not a lot of places that welcome you with two dogs.
However, nobody batted an eye when we came in so that was a good start. The bar was filled with Spanish builders grabbing a drink after work and truckdrivers.
The food is surprisingly good! We had a mixed salad, an avocado and prawn salad and two huevos rellenos and they were all very nice. The avocado was drenched in mayonaise, but the avocado was great (maybe ask for dressing on the side). For our main course we had pork chops and pork skewers, because we figured they were ´safe´foods. Not only were they safe, they were quite delicious, so next time I might be more adventurous and go for the fish! At 83 euros for four people, two courses each, drinks and coffee I thought we got a pretty good deal.

Chez Spice’s quality has dropped in recent times and the food was always expensive. They have a cheaper menu now, and heaters, so it no longer cold (the roof was lowered as well to keep the heat in). The host, Sylvia is really lovely but the other business partner, Piyush, is a miserable git and never even greeted me properly when I visited, even after a couple of years, so we stopped going! I would not go for that reason alone. Real shame…
