Restaurant La Almazara Orgiva

Orange tree

Orange tree

In the middle of Orgiva is a garden filled with orange trees. When the weather’s fine you can sit under a tree and enjoy a beer (beerfans: they serve Erdinger Weissbier!) and some of the finest pizza in La Alpujarra.

Of late, the weather gods have not been kind to me in La Alpujarra: today the mountains were so foggy I could barely see three meters in front of me. Which made driving tricky. And it was raining. Now I know folks out here are overjoyed when it rains, but I’m not Alpujarrena enough (by a long shot) to be happy when it drizzles. Yes, I know, the trees, the land needs water, yadayada, but I’d rather see sunny blue skies and sit outside basking in the sun.

Anyway, inside La Almazara is very unspanish, i.e. no tv, airy and light. Still, don’t expect anything fancy, it’s a simple, nice place with recycled paper napkins. And rather noisy. Something in the kitchen made a sound like a distant rave, a radio was whining in the background and an elderly gentleman with a booming voice four tables away from me held forth, at length, about the trouble with his feet.

The terrible acoustics made it impossible to have any sort of conversation. Luckily, the food was great. The sopa de cebollas (onion soup) alone is worth the visit, but the salada de casa (house salad), the pizza and the arroz negro (black paella) were great. They also serve a great rioja. It’s not cheap, all in all we paid 58 euros for a starter, a main course, wine, Erdinger and coffee. Well worth it in our book though!

A tip when eating or simply drinking in Spain: explore the wines! Ask what else they have, because the table wine is usually godawful, even if they have a cellar stocked to the hilt with wonderful wines! A rioja is usually a safe, and in this case even a great, choice!
