From Dusk til Dawn: Night 1 with Madoff
My respect for people who take on babies deepens and deepens. Getting up about every hour sucks so badly. I guess young parents do have the advantage over dog owners that they don’t have to step out into the freezing cold with a shivering puppy who tries to climb into your socks and try and make him ‘eliminate’. Yes dear, I’m cold too, please, do your thing, and we can all get back to our nice warm beds!
Benching the pup was surprisingly easy. After a couple of treats he actually went in there quite willingly. Closing the door went fine, he’s comfy and happy. But he does want to get out. Every hour or so. Sometimes I could simply quiet him down by sticking my fingers in the bench and shushing him. And every two hours or so I took him out, filled with hope that maybe, just maybe, this time he’d actually DO something, rather than stare at me bewilderedly. Made me feel a right fool. Cold as well. A friend of mine told me he tried benching his pup as well, but gave up after three days because he wanted to strangle the little mutt and just let him sleep in bed.
I think it’s too early to admit defeat just yet, so I’m going to try for two more nights. I have to find a way to stop Madoff from whining for longer stretches of time and make him go outside, rather than underneath the diningroom table. The bench is working quite well, he goes in there to have a nap as well, he eats, he drinks. Now to make sure he stops soiling the house….
