6 January: Los Reyes magos
In case you were wondering why the &^%$ all the shops are closed: it is Los Reyes Magos today!
Just when you thought all the partying was over, January 6th rolls around in Spain and we have to dust off our party hats once again!
In the Netherlands children put out their shoes to get presents from Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas, the Anglo Saxon world hangs their socks out for Father Christmas and in Spain children wait for Los Reyes magos, the Three Kings.
The three wise men followed the star to the site of Christ’s birth, bearing gifts. Actually, there may have been more kings, but only three were recorded in the bible: Caspar, Balthasar and Melchior. Spanish children put out drinks for the kings and food for their camels. The poor camels only get to eat once a year, so you better make the snack worth their while!
So if you’ve been good this year, put out a carrot or two for the camels, shake up a stiff cocktail for the kings and you too might get some presents from los Reyes!
