Finding a shoemaker in La Alpujarra
As these things always happen, all my shoes broke down at the same time. First I shuffled along on my broken walking boots, with the soles flapping around my ankles. After nearly sliding down a ravine (well, down a slightly steep hill with a lot of trees) I decided enough was enough: either I’d have to get my old boots fixed somehow or I’d have to find some new ones.
A thorough search of Orgiva yielded no shoes. Well, no walking shoes, I saw some really nice bright red high heels (cadenas altas), but they weren’t really suitable for long mountain walks. Asking around didn’t help, everybody was agreed that there were no walking boots in Orgiva. Motril. Maybe not even there.
A shoemaker then? I had a go with some super glue but that didn’t do the trick, so I went out looking for a shoemaker. There was a rumour about an old man, somewhere in the barrio alta, near the ermita. You may want to try that, because if nothing else, it sounds ever so quaint and Alpujarran. I however was on a roll and a kind man in a shop told me there was an actual shoemaker in Pampaneira. With a shop and tools and everything. It’s on main street, on the left, you can’t miss it. They even make shoes from scratch if you like, but I’m hoping they’ll just fix my nice old walking boots.
