Famous & expensive last words!
Proust lovers, listen up!
Sotheby’s is auctioning some very rare Proust memorabilia, including his last words! For such a great writer, you’d wish his last words had been slightly more impressive, but still!
On the day of his death, Proust wrote some instructions to his housekeeper Celeste Albaret on a scrap of paper. You can apparently still see the coffee stains! How did He like his coffee? Black, I suspect.
I must admit, I got a bit greedy myself. Owning a piece of literary history! When I was at university studying medieval lit we once had quite a violent discussion on who you’d save if a building was on fire: a baby or a Gutenberg Bible. I, of course, opted for the Gutenberg Bible. Babies galore and you can always make some more, whereas there are only a few Gutenberg Bibles left!
Fun times, fun times.
Owning Prousts last words would be so COOL! But I’ll probably not be the only one who’d like to own them. I was sorely tempted to bid for a medaillon with a lock of His hair, but it’s been estimated at 15.000 euros. Bit to steep for me. Alas.
