Hotel Restaurant de Mecina – love the cod!

Hotel rural de Mecina Fondales

Hotel rural de Mecina Fondales

As the name suggests, this is Mecina’s only hotel. It doesn’t look very welcoming, with blaring, energy saving lamps and a pretty dated interior, but the food’s great. And abundant.

It’s relatively expensive for the area, for that you get real, professional and ever cheerful waiters, table cloths and food that’s just nicer than most other places around here. It’s still pretty much the same, cod, lamb, pork, omelettes, fries, but it’s all done very well.

I had the cod, which I liked so much, I went back the next week and had it again! Cooked to juicy perfection and served with tasty veg, rare in the area. The wine’s excellent, local vino espumante goes at 12 euros a bottle, we had a lovely red as well, it’s the top one on the page with local reds, it’s 18 euro’s, but I can’t for the life of me remember the name. It was that good ;)
For desert there’s the inevitable arroz con leche, apple pie, ice cream and flan. I just had coffee which comes with complementary local liquor which will knock the enamel right off your teeth. Inside’s not particularly nice to sit, blissfully no tv, yet, but it’s stiff and formal and dark. Outside there’s a great balcony that overlooks the gardens and the pool, so as if many places in La Alpujarra, it’s better to eat here on a sunny day and make sure you get to sit on the balcony!
