I’d almost given up on dpns, as we in the know call them. To dummies like I used to be, oh, 24 hours ago, that’s ‘double pointed knitting needles‘. Or, the Tools of Satan, as I like to call them. I remember buying these dpns. I was all happy and glowing thinking of the nice pair of baby socks I’d knit for my sister’s baby-to-be.

The snarling harpy in the shop looked at me as if I was something her cat shaped teacosy had dragged in when I asked for “real easy knitting needles, to knit my first sock”.
I’ve been to more knitting shops and I find they are all very snooty to newbies. I’d think that as a struggling shop selling overpriced wool you’d want to welcome anyone under 75 with open arms, but hey, I was just a newbie then. Today, I could dazzle her with my use of words like ‘dpns’ and, erm, ‘yarn’.

So snarl-lady just stuck me with the tiniest pair of slippery dpns you’ve ever seen, threw in a pattern that looked like something NASA had cooked up and sent me on my way. Five years down the road I’m still stuck with these tiny, barely visible to the human eye, dpns, but FINALLY I’v found a helpful video!

I’m a bit embarrassed to say this, but I’ve been watching a LOT of knitting video’s these past few days and frankly, most of them are no good. Most experienced knitters, when trying to explain the basics, just don’t get that you really don’t know anything. Teaching me to knit is like teaching a rabbit to ride a bicycle: it’s going to take a lot of explaining and this rabbit will fall off the bicycle a LOT.

So here’s the video I hope is going to teach me all: Knittingtips by Judy. I already like Judy. She sounds like a female Bob Ross, all friendly and cuddly, and likes to take her knitting slow. No short-cuts for Judy! I’m just waiting for her to say stuff like ‘happy little stitches’.
