La cueva de la mora luna – Mecina, La Taha
La cueva de la mora luna (which, in my very basic Spanish, translates to something like The cave of the Morish moon) is a whole mouth full, most locals refer to this place as The pianobar, which it also is, or simply Carlos’ place.
Carlos is the energetic owner of La cueva and it’s thanks to his tireless efforts that this is the best bar for miles around. There’s live music, practically every week, with Spanish guitar(see video), jazz combo’s or Flamenco. Even out of season the place is often packed, which is why it’s wise to get there early and have a bite to eat.
Carlos, the self proclaimed Rey de la pizza, or Pizza King, has a basic, cheap menu with, you’ve guessed it, lots of pizza. Pretty good pizza it is as well, even though ‘king’ might be a bit much, he could, maybe, be a baron of pizza. Nice thick toppings, between 8-10 euros a pop, you can’t go far wrong. Also on the menu: veggie empanadas, a bit bland I must admit, and pretty good salads. For desert I like to have a Bounty ice cream, but they also have homemade arroz con leche.
More than its food it’s the place itsself. There’s always something going on, people stop by, spontaneously start playing the piano, have a chat, and it’s a lovely place with homemade fresco’s of the sun and the moon that give it the feel of a real cave. Highly recommended!
