And now for the heel…. Help!

Yay, starting to look like a sock!

Yay, starting to look like a sock!

Yesterday I got so excited about finally getting somewhere with this sock project I knitted til my fingers were sore. Things were great, until I realized that even though the shaft I was knitting was very nice, at some point I’d have to get started on The Heel.

No worries, I thought, I’ll turn to Cat! She’ll know how to do a heel with two circulars, there’ll be a nice instruction video and all will be right with the world.

Alas, not so! So far I haven’t been able to find anything on turning a heel with two circulars. I have once again watched a lot more  knitting videos than can possibly be healthy for a young lass, but I’m getting nowhere. Help!

Ok. Took a deep breath, had a cold beer and now I’m ready to go on. Looked for turning a heel and found a lot of useless sh*&, but also, eventually, found a written description of knitting a flap and a useful video about turning a heel: (mind you: first you knit the flap, then you turn the heel!) Knitting the flap on two circulars is easy:
You drop one circular and just let it dangle for this bit. Then you take the other one and you slip the first stitch, then knit or purl the rest of the needle. The instructions said purl, I’m not much of a purler, so I knitted.

Plain Flap
Row 1 (right side): slip 1 st, knit to end.
Row 2: slip 1 st, purl to end.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

I did this one:

Slip Stitch Flap (produces a sturdier, more snug flap)
Row 1 (right side): [slip 1, knit 1] across.
Row 2: slip 1 st, purl to end.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

I forgot about the purling and then thought, whatever, and just knitted the stinking thing.  I also sometimes forgot to knit one, slip one, and if you’re particular about these things I’m sure you’ll get freaked out about it, but I thought, again “whatever” and in the end I had a pretty good, workable heel.

Here’s me slipping the first, knitting the second, slipping the third, knitting the fourth etc. (I get confused after a bit, but you’ll catch my drift)

Slipping the first stitch on a needle is vital, because you’ll be needing those when you make THE GUSSET.

But first you have to turn the heel and as this video shows it sounds a lot worse than it is:

It’s called short row decreasing and it’s totally doable. Well, pretty doable anyway.

I was ridiculously proud of my sock and dug out a celebratory g&T. Tomorrow though, I’ll tackle the gusset…..
