Librivox

War and peace

In addition to my diet of Hola! I am listening to the Librivox.org audioversion of War and Peace, a book I’ve been meaning to read it for years. I’ve done twenty hours of solid listening and it’s still bl&^%dy 1805! On the other hand, I must say I like it. I get confused sometimes, because the names sound alike and, as with Proust (my previous project, it took me five years to read A la recherche des temps perdu and it’s one of the things I pride myself of most. Finishing Proust and getting my drivers license are two of my main achievements in life!) there are a LOT of characters (580!) who are mentioned with different names. (why???) However, the main characters are quite fascinating, so I try not to fast forward (or doze) through the endless Russian campaigns against Napoleon (who actually comes out as a pretty nice guy!).

In a way it reminds of a dance to the music of time, all these characters intermingling…

But I digress!

If you find yourself with time on your hand and you want to do something literary, try volunteering for librivox.org. They are a strictly non-profit group who turn books that are in the public domain into audiobooks. Great fun, and if you’re curious, I’ve read parts of Little women, (chapter 42) and of course, War and peace!
